Where Our Eggs Come From

"There's no place better in the world to raise a family than on a farm” - Colin Springford

Ever wonder where our eggs come from? Well, they come from the little piece of paradise called Springford Farm which Colin created over 40 years ago with his wife, Diane. But the inspiration for its beginnings goes back much further than that.

In 1941, Colin's parents moved from Saskatoon to Sidney, right here on the Vancouver Island. They operated a small hand-milk dairy farm, where Colin was born 4 years later. At 8, he talked his dad into plowing some land so he could have his own vegetable garden. Through his teen years, Colin's passion for plants continued to grow alongside the flowers he nurtured while working at Butchart Gardens.

After high school, Colin had a successful construction business for some time, but after meeting his wife, Diane, he got back to his passion: farm life. They bought some land in Nanoose Bay and - as we often hear - what started as a small hobby farm quickly grew into so much more. While also raising their family, this little hobby turned into a thriving free-range egg and grass-fed beef family farm which has now been passed down to his son Ross and his wife Erin.

Ross and Erin live and work on the farm along with their two young boys Parker and Landon, who are involved in 4-H and helping the team out around the barns and the market. They believe in building a strong, resilient community, are active supporters of local non-profits such as Nanoose Community Services and Nanaimo Food Share.

Sadly, Colin passed away in 2021, but the family is keeping his legacy alive by creating the Springford Family Foundation, which provides grants of up to $2,000 to support initiatives in three focus areas that improve local communities within the Oceanside region. It aims to improve local communities in the Oceanside region and leave the world a better place for our children.

So now you know the story of where our eggs come from. At LR, we simply can't just pick any vendor! We care too much and know that you do, too. Our eggs come from a beautiful family with a beautiful story and one heck of a gorgeous farm, where happy chickens eat a healthy diet, have access to fresh water, and are allowed to roam as they please.
